The Department of Education & Early Development's process to review applications for 21st Century Community Learning Center grants resulted in the following recommendations:
- Anchorage School District: Muldoon Elementary School, Ptarmigan Elementary School, Russian Jack Elementary School and Wonder Park Elementary School
The Anchorage School District 21st Century Alaska Community Learning Centers (CLC) continues the project at four Title I schools. The CLCs will target highest-risk students who are below proficient in reading, writing, math, and science. The goal is to increase achievement in math, reading, writing, and science for all CLC students.
- Mat-Su School District: Burchell High School, Valley Pathways High School and Correspondence Program
The target population includes 300 Burchell High School students, 200 Valley Pathways High School students, and 100 Correspondence Study School high School students. Goals include increasing academic success, graduation rates, and academic enrichment opportunities of students in the Community Learning Centers.
- Bering Strait School District: Koyuk Malemute School and Shishmaref School
The Recreation, Academics, Cultures, and Enrichment (RACE) project will build on the current ACLC project (named ARC) in five other BSSD villages and will focus on academic achievement. RACE will provide afterschool Homework Club, recreational, cultural, and enrichment activities.
- Juneau School District: Juneau-Douglas High School
The Credit Attainment, Recovery & employability Skills (CARES) Center is designed for JSD students in grades 9-12 who are credit deficient. The Center will also work with dropouts who want to return to school, makeup credits, and graduate with a diploma. There are three elements of CAREs, these includes: academic and elective classes, academic enrichment classes and workshops, and vocational/technical classes and experiences that give students skills they need to find and keep work.
- Fairbanks School District: Lathrop High School, Ryan Middle School, Randy Smith Middle School, North Pole Elementary School and North Pole Middle School
This is a continuation of the 21st Century Alaska Community Learning Centers (ACLCs) at five schools within the Fairbank North Star Borough School District. The goals of the program include: participating students will improve academic performance, as well as gain protective factors that foster resiliency to high-risk behaviors and encourage academic success, and ACLCs will offer expanded learning opportunities for families in the program.
- Alaska Gateway School District: Tok School, Tetlin School, Eagle School and Walter Northway School
The Alaska Gateway School District will focus funding on 4 sites in the district to provide after school programming that addresses Academics, Tutoring, Homework Assistance, Health and Nutritional activities that are focused on developing the whole child utilizing a Social/Emotional framework.
Following the end of the formal appeals process for this competition, the department will begin working with grantees to prepare for projects beginning July 1, 2009. |
