Which three of the following would most improve the high school graduation rate in Alaska?
#Response DateOther (please specify)
.10/12/2008 6:14:00 AMRural students need opportunity to work in impoverished communities.
.10/12/2008 10:06:00 PMPrograms to impact teacher, principal and superintendent quality.
.10/12/2008 10:32:00 PMAdult Education Programs leading to a Diploma; Well-rounded curriculum including music & the arts; Stability and consistency of administrators and teachers
.10/13/2008 6:05:00 PMTeaching relevant/practical content, not teaching to the test.
.10/13/2008 6:13:00 PMeducation which teaches through and supports, rather than trying to supplant Native culture
.10/13/2008 6:28:00 PMcounseling and other social supports within communities

.10/15/2008 8:31:00 PMPrograms, programs, programs... we need to go back to the day when an 8th grade education meant something. We need to get away from all of these programs and get back to discipline in the classroom (not punishment), teach good old self control, citizenship, patriotism, actually teach the children to be good americans, teach them about the strong moral character of the men and women who founded this country and why and teach them to defend their rights and liberties, the basis for why we educate a child is fundamental to how we educate a child...you don't fish with a gun and you don't make an apple pie with sawdust. This survey is too suggestive and open to private interpretation which will then be used in a way that was not intended. Fight hard to take education back away from the feds...this is a huge misplacement. What adult (parent or civic leader) would think it best that the children be governed from afar? Are we not smart enough at a state level to educate our own? Let us compete with the other states, this is how it was set up. If our education is better than the other states, it will show in economic growth, because our young bright minds will invent a better way, we should expect them to take us to the next level in all areas of life. I get excited when I think about what the possibilities are and I get mad when I think of all of the government regulation that prevents it from happening. Shame on us! I sincerely hope that the great citizens of the great state of Alaska will put themselves on the map for being forward thinkers by going back to a firm foundation, and building with character which comes from morality, which can only come from a relationship with God, our creator.

.10/23/2008 11:40:00 PMThe issues are more complex than can be adequately addressed on a survey...but... the mandatory testing and the interventions used to "help" improve test scores is backward logic and further increases the gap between schools and the communities.

No more excuses for the few bad teachers....these are children's lives we are talking about.
.10/25/2008 12:10:00 AMBetter Teachers and smaller class sizes
.10/25/2008 12:28:00 AMIndividual counseling/career planning
.10/25/2008 12:33:00 AMIf we made the Public School System responsible for children from age 3 until age 21 I really believe that we could turn negative family behaior around so they next generations of young adults could function in society. By that I mean hold a job, be involved with their families and get out of this pattern of extreme SICK behavior that is in our schools now. That way money would be used to break destructive family patterns instead of paying for all of the attorneys (free-public defenders) incarceration facilities for young adults and jail time for those over 18. I believe that the public would get tired of pouring money into the jail and court system and send major money and help to the early childhood programs in our state, and maybe that way we can break some of these FAS/FAE, drug babies, violent physiucal and sexual abouses that are currently carried on the backs of young children. It has got to be stopped or our nation is going to turn into a bunch of violent, mush-heads. INTERVENTION MUST BE USED IN THE EARLY YEARS to teach parents how to get help and change they way they think about having children without the proper care and nuturing they need. It is a sad state of affairs when women are having 4 plus children and the state takes them all away only to have another pregnancy--------all I can think of is here we go again! It is very disturbing to be to be involved with families of 2nd and 3rd generation of FAS, and horrific stories of violence done to such young children nowdays. It is so unfair to keep producing children in homes with severe abuse and violence becasue the children only go on to have another generation of the same behaviors. By incarcerating young adults and adults for the awful things they do to another human it does NOT help to STOP the continious cycle of abuse. If money was put towards psychiatrists, pshchologists, COUNCELORS, etc., to deal wtih families JUST MAYBE......we could turn some behaviors around and BREAK THE CYCLE OF DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR. The ANGER that young children are showing up to school with at such an early age is frightening. I have never even remotely begin to suffer like many young children have that are entering school nowdays. It is a sad state of affairs, to say the least. The violence they experience first hand is reflected by the violence they use on other young children. They do not understand what is going on in themselves. If not for programs like Community Connections who provide "trackers--"-MHA's" to be near these children on a daily basis you would see even more violence.

.10/27/2008 8:53:00 PMPay teachers more, hire more hispanics, and minorities...
.10/27/2008 9:01:00 PMLonger school day, better use of motivational tool, like a form of museum hands on learning every morning and afternoon after school.Projects of the month with prizes or recognition, not student of the month. 169.10/29/2008 7:42:00 AMTeach to the Dyslexic and Learning Different Students. A student who can read (not just at 2nd grade level but within the parameters of levels for grades) and UNDERSTAND what they are reading and can write so others understand probably will not become a criminal. If a literacy program was implemented at McLaughlin Youth Center in Anchorage and these youth helped with their reading they could become successful and not keep returning to jail (yes MYC is a jail). I would be the first in line to volunteer. This would also reduce violence, drug, and alcohol problems. These problems are often a product of not learning to read and having low self esteem and no confidence. Learn to read, learn to like yourself, and say no to drugs and violence. If the system has failed these kids perhaps the schools can teach them how to cope and rise above the mess.
.10/29/2008 5:10:00 PMAllow more Alaska Native Students here in Anchorage a chance at attending a College or University. Teachers in High School and other staff do their best at making sure that the Alaska Native Students are not successful.

.10/30/2008 1:51:00 AMTeacher retention and financial support of good teachers
.10/30/2008 2:39:00 AMExcellent options for selection! Many students eschew learning for whatever reason. Later choices for post-secondary education will always be available. Students in classes should be there because they want to learn. Students who want 'something else' should have support to select other options. Currently the unmotivated and disruptive students are impacting the success of many truly motivated students. this is an enormous waste of educational resources and very trying for academecians, like teachers. all unmotivated students do not need Special Education Services. Too many students who are simply unmotivated and disruptive are dragging down the system by being legitimatized through the referral process. Ther will never be enough Special Educators to fill the needs for service at this rate. Outcomes for SPED students are dismal without suitable vocational options.

.10/30/2008 12:35:00 PMany program that will keep the students engaged after school...internships/voacational/..anything...the critical part being that the hours between school letting out and parent supervision is a problem area. Starting school later would limit the afternoon hours as well.

.10/30/2008 7:05:00 PMAn education that is relevant to kids in the village. Most seem to be college prep schools, when in reality, most graduates stay in their villages. We need to give them an education that will make them productive citizens of their villages.
.10/30/2008 7:38:00 PM3 CHOICES ARE NOT ENOUGH! parental programs, school choice, career programs, more teachers, violence prevention programs, more emphasis on global issues, community involvement, preparation for adulthood.....
.10/30/2008 7:41:00 PMthis progrqam is not working
.10/30/2008 8:32:00 PMKids need to be valued and treated with respect throughout their school life. There are staff development needs in the area of communicating respect and caring, while maintaining discipline, safety and education. Kids that feel valued and valuable, and excited about learning will continue into high school and beyond.
.10/30/2008 10:04:00 PMIt is hard to narrow that down. All people learn differently and it is hard to meet the needs of every one.

.10/30/2008 10:59:00 PMWow our young citizens! It is THEIR time and money!
.10/30/2008 11:40:00 PMMake high school compulsive until age 18
.10/30/2008 11:43:00 PMRemove high school graduation exam
.10/30/2008 11:44:00 PMMore Physical Education requirements. 1 1/2 credits at the high school level is ridiculous. Expectations at the elementary and middle school levels- ones that have consequences. If you can't read you shouldn't move up!
.10/31/2008 12:25:00 AM1) lower student/teacher ratio; 2) increase parent participation
.10/31/2008 4:52:00 AMBetter teacher pay and benefits to attract the very best and brightest
.10/31/2008 4:56:00 AMA swift kick in the ass to the parents of the troubled children!!!! Or PARENTING CLASSES for them! There's already enough out there for help, and if it isn't working it must be no help from home!
.10/31/2008 8:42:00 AMImprovement in the delivery of special education services and supports. Parents are having to go to due process more than once for similar FAPE violations and ASD continues to fail to provide FAPE even in the face of due process decisions finding it in violation.
.10/31/2008 4:45:00 PMMore learning oppurtunities in the rural areas such as music, language, art, all the other classes that are taught in rural areas. Give them more of a selection.
.10/31/2008 4:55:00 PMattendance policies that meant something
.10/31/2008 5:40:00 PMRestructure graduation requirements - Stop specifying classes such as "Alsaka Studies" etc. and let students focus on classes which will directly effect the bottom line. Health/PE requirements allowing classes such as "Ping pong" to qualify? How can anyone take that seriously?
.10/31/2008 5:44:00 PMInclude traditional ways of learning, teaching and survival skills in two worlds.
.10/31/2008 6:12:00 PMrequest agencies to disclose their needs so all students who are candidates for gainful employment (even minimal hours) can participate and agencies can support those persons in the community

.11/1/2008 2:25:00 AMsmaller class sizes will result in higher quality teaching, learning and graduation. Money going to training could be better spent making smaller classes resulting in improved education. Teachers have training they never get to use due to discipline issues resulting from LARGE class sizes and unpredictable home lives.
.11/1/2008 5:11:00 AMMastery of basic skills by 6th grade, ready to apply to areas that they have an interest in. 8th grade competency allowing them to choose area of interest as incentive to completion and mastery

.11/5/2008 6:27:00 AMmore teacher and less student in class
.11/5/2008 5:28:00 PMsmaller class size
.11/5/2008 5:57:00 PMRedfine the graduation rate to include a measure for students who graduate at all- as in it may take some students longer than 4 years- but they do graduate. Right now- we measure graduation as a four year venture while graduation itself is an extreme challenge for some students. They should be part of the notion that they DID graduate, albeit not "on time". No one wants students to graduate in 5 years, but if we allow students a "free education' until the semester they turn 20- then that should factor in the graduation rate. If we want to stick with the way we factor it now, then we should change the age to 18. (Although I like it the way it is- we need to be able to assist our youth and that is sometimes a tool for helping them- letting them have additional time to make it.)
.11/6/2008 12:00:00 AMVaried instruction methods. More methods to help struggling students become successful.
.11/6/2008 5:23:00 PMTeaching to the child, not to the test. Discovering the students' strengths, emphasizing instuction towards those strengths, and giving students greater opportunities for success would all improve student attitude toward lifelong learning. Of course, this would require more time, individualized attention, smaller class sizes, more money, etc.
.11/6/2008 5:53:00 PMChanging laws that allow students to legally drop out of school before the age of 18. Parents MUST be held more accountable for student attendance/performance in school.
.11/7/2008 1:41:00 AMfunding for supplies, teachers, and space

.11/12/2008 11:07:00 PMEvery drop-out is a diff't case. Punitive approaches (such as out of school suspension) just seem to "reward" and encourage a child to miss school more.
