The
Golden Shipment
The "Seattle Post-lntelligencer" sent its newsmen in a chartered tug to
meet the "Portland" before it docked at the end of its golden voyage from
St.Michael. The scoop was out on the streets before the passengers disembarked
with their cargo of $700,000 worth of gold. The Seattle headlines, much
more flamboyant than those in San Francisco, where the Excelsior had docked
two days before, swept across the country...and across the world. As the
rush began, Seattle seized the lead as the primary shipping port to Alaska
and the gold fields.
