School Health

The Health Team promotes healthy lifestyles through collaborative partnerships with parents, schools and their communities. This is consistent with the Alaska State Board of Education & Early Development’s Vision. We assist school districts, community agencies and families by enhancing statewide communication, as well as facilitate connections for needed programs. We strive to assess, monitor, and evaluate ongoing educational programs with statewide educational leadership.

What's New:

  • NewAlaska Education Plan: Student Health & Safety
The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development (EED) is in the process of implementing recommendations from the Student Health and Safety section of the Alaska Education Plan, the state’s first blueprint for public education. Actions steps from the plan will result in students having access to safe schools, where they develop healthy and safe practices for life.

The department is utilizing resources and recommendations from many sources to design the implementation for the actions steps identified by the public at the November 2008 Education Summit, including recommendations from: the December 2008 Health Summit Partnerships Group; the School Health and Safety Education Plan Working Group; the Alaska Student Health & Safety Advisory Committee; and the Alaska School Health Interagency Team.

  • NewDraft Alaska Physical Education (PE) Standards
The Alaska Physical Education Standards are in DRAFT form. Informal public comments can be made in writing to Kiara.Alexander@alaska.gov until March 1, 2010. The Alaska Physical Education Standards document will then be presented to the State Board of Education at their March 25-26, 2010 meeting. Additional opportunities to provide public comment will be solicited through Board action at that time. It is anticipated that the Board would formally adopt the finalized standards at their June 10-11, 2010, meeting. The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development anticipates the adopted PE Standards to be available to the public by July 30, 2010.
  • NewH1N1 (Swine) Flu
The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development designed this page as a resource for districts to use in the event of a flu outbreak and to provide easy access to state and federal flu updates.
